Helen first became aware of ActionAid when she was approached by an ActionAid face-to-face fundraiser. She decided to become a supporter because she thought the combination of working directly with the world’s poorest and campaigning on the big issues that are keeping them poor really made sense. The more she learnt as a supporter, the bigger the difference she thought they were making. When a suitable job came up in the organisation, she was thrilled and went for it.
Helen started as the International Director of Fundraising and Communication at ActionAid International over ten years ago, and joined as the Director of Fundraising for ActionAid UK in 2011. Before ActionAid, Helen worked for Greenpeace International as a Regional Fundraising Manager.
One of Helen’s greatest achievements at ActionAid was starting the fundraising programme in Brazil and the new markets work she did while at AAI. This led to the setup of ActionAid in Sweden and the expansion into the Netherlands and Australia.
“Ten years later I’m still here because I really believe we are doing the right things to end poverty. I have been able to meet many people whose lives have been changed through ActionAid. We put people first by being patient and supportive in the process of change whilst being brave enough to challenge the deeply rooted issues that contribute to poverty.”
